In three Jurassic World films, Bryce Dallas Howard faced bioengineered dinosaurs for ten years, but off-screen, she’s known to be far more reserved.

The Argylle star tells USARTICAL  in this week’s issue, “What I always joke about is that the only risks I take are in my work, I’m so risk averse.”

With one exception, Howard—who is married to actor Seth Gabel and has two children, a 12-year-old daughter and a 17-year-old son—says she’s a laid-back mother.

The 42-year-old admits, “I’m not very strict as a parent, but I’ll ask my kids, ‘Do you think I’m strict?” “No, you’re not,” they respond. aside from matters of safety.”

It became apparent when Howard’s oldest child started driving.

She laughs, “My son is currently obtaining his license and the poor boy, what I put him through.” “At this point, he can essentially drive a race car because I’m saying, ‘You can’t get your license until you can perform every possible defensive driving maneuver.'”

Howard was drawn to the action thriller Argylle because of her propensity for cost-benefit analysis. In the film, she plays an introverted espionage novelist who is unexpectedly thrown into a true subterranean crime syndicate. The actress explains, “It’s a new kind of character and probably the closest to me as a person that I’ve played before.”

She claims that the character was a perfect fit. This film is largely about her realizing her power, her journey toward courage, empowerment, and overcoming her fear to step out. I found that making this film to be incredibly uplifting.

Despite everything, Howard has been risking everything on screen for more than 20 years. She made her breakthrough in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village 20 years ago, which she describes as “an incredibly physical movie” that changed her life in every way. Since then, she has taken on daring roles in films like Spider-Man 3, The Help, a subversive Black Mirror turn, and the Jurassic World trilogy costarring Chris Pratt.

“I was born to act and perform and be a storyteller,” declares Howard, who spent the majority of her childhood living outside of Los Angeles with her mother Cheryl, a novelist, and father Ron Howard, a director. It was Cheryl who served as inspiration for Howard’s most recent role in Argylle. “My mother is a writer; she has a vivid imagination and has no interest in social issues,” she explains.

After spending years learning the ropes as an actor on movie sets, she has also been gradually expanding her resume as a director, directing episodes of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and the upcoming Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. She declares, “I love directing, and it’s as important to me as acting.”

Howard is prepared for whatever comes next. “This stability in my relationships and in my family, I feel very grateful for,” she says. And we’ll see what the craziness of what the future might bring is like.
