The anticipated historical drama “Death by Lightning” on Netflix, created by Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, has expanded its stellar cast with the addition of Nick Offerman and Betty Gilpin.
Based on Candice Millard’s novel “Destiny of the Republic,” the series, ordered straight to series earlier this month, promises a deep dive into the “stranger-than-fiction true story” of James Garfield, the 20th president of the United States, and his enigmatic admirer, Charles Guiteau, whose actions would lead to Garfield’s tragic demise.
The lead roles are set with Michael Shannon (George & Tammy) portraying James Garfield and Matthew Macfadyen, Emmy winner from Succession, playing Charles Guiteau.
Joining the ensemble, Betty Gilpin, renowned for her role in GLOW, returns to Netflix as Crete Garfield, the former first lady. Nick Offerman is set to bring President Chester Arthur to life, Garfield’s vice president who ascended to the presidency after Garfield’s untimely death.

The series, penned by Mike Makowsky (Bad Education), boasts executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, alongside Matt Ross (Captain Fantastic) and Bernie Caulfield. Matt Ross is assigned as the director of the series.
Nick Offerman is represented by Jackoway Austen and UTA, while Betty Gilpin is associated with Hansen Jacobson, Anonymous Content, and CAA.
