Denis Villeneuve, the director, had initially planned two significant adaptations of Frank Herbert’s Dune, but recent statements suggest the potential for a trilogy.
Villeneuve, adamant about doing justice to the epic narrative of Dune, expressed his desire to create “at least three” films to honor the vast story. The first two movies cover the events from Herbert’s original novel, showcasing Paul Atreides’ journey from the ducal heir on Caladan to the prophesied messiah on Arrakis. 
In Dune: Part Two, Paul, portrayed by Chalamet, faces new challenges on Arrakis, collaborating with Fremen leader Javier Bardem and his lover Zendaya to thwart spice harvesting and seek revenge on those who destroyed his royal house. The film introduces Anya Taylor-Joy as Paul’s psychic sister, Alia Atreides, setting the stage for potential events from Herbert’s Dune Messiah. 
Denis Villeneuve revealed last August that a third movie could delve into the events of Dune Messiah, Herbert’s second book in the series. In this envisioned sequel, Paul, having defeated his adversaries, embarks on a cosmic holy war as predicted in his visions induced by spice. Princess Irulan, played by Florence Pugh, enters the picture, complicating relationships with Paul and Chani (Zendaya). 
The tension and dynamics among Paul, Chani, and Irulan, highlighted in the pivotal last scene of Part Two, hint at the complex storytelling that a third installment might explore. Zendaya expresses her curiosity about the future, particularly the development of Princess Irulan’s character and her relationships.
