In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Shakira bravely opened up about her long-term romance with Gerard Piqué, shedding light on the sacrifices made and the challenges faced throughout their 11-year relationship, which came to an end in June 2022. 
The 47-year-old singer candidly shared about putting her career on hold to support Piqué’s football career, stating, “There was a lot of sacrifice for love.” Despite her immense success in the music industry, Shakira prioritized her relationship, emphasizing the importance of being by Piqué’s side as he pursued his passion.
Their love story began on the set of Shakira’s “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” music video in 2010, blossoming into a public relationship confirmed on social media in March 2011. Together, they welcomed two children, Milan in January 2013 and Sasha in January 2015, illustrating the depth of their commitment to both each other and their family.
However, in a joint statement released in June 2022, the couple announced their separation, expressing their mutual regret while prioritizing the privacy and well-being of their children. Despite the dissolution of their marriage, Shakira reflected on her belief in “’till death do us part,” drawing inspiration from her parents’ enduring love. 
In a Billboard cover story from the previous year, Shakira spoke of her unwavering faith in lifelong love, rooted in her parents’ 50-year marriage. Though her own relationship did not follow the same trajectory, Shakira remains hopeful, acknowledging that while her dream of everlasting love may not have materialized, the possibility remains for her children and others.
