After six weeks of release, the adorable pink movie musical has brought in $101.2 million globally, with $30 million coming from 31 foreign regions and $71.2 million from North America.Inspired by the Broadway version of the 2004 comedy classic, “Mean Girls” was first ordered with the intention of debuting straight on Paramount+ for streaming, but following positive test screenings, the executives decided to go straight to theaters. The musical movie only came to $36 million in costs.
After its release on January 12, “Mean Girls” opened at number one in the American box office for three weeks in a row. It also had top openings in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico. On February 15, the movie was released in Thailand. Later this month, it will debut in Singapore and India.
Angourie Rice, reprising Lindsay Lohan’s role as Cady Heron in the new “Mean Girls,” plays the character who has to negotiate her new high school’s social scene. After the film’s first showing in January, 75% of viewers were aware that it was a musical before they bought a ticket, and 16% said they were “disappointed” with the genre after they exited the theater. These findings were released by Paramount based on exit poll data.
The head of worldwide marketing and distribution at Paramount, Marc Weinstock, discussed the decision to minimize the song-and-dance sequences in “Mean Girls” promotional materials with usartical.
“We didn’t want to run out and say it’s a musical because people tend to treat musicals differently,” Weinstock explained. “This is a musical broad comedy.” Though it has a wider appeal, it might be classified as a musical.
