Regina King Shares Her Journey of Grieving and Remembrance for Son Ian Alexander Jr.
In a poignant interview on Good Morning America, Regina King speaks publicly for the first time in two years about the loss of her son, Ian Alexander Jr. The 53-year-old actress, renowned for her role in “If Beale Street Could Talk,” opens up about the difficult path of grieving.Ian tragically took his own life at the age of 26 in January 2022, just two days after celebrating his birthday on January 21. 
Reflecting on the past two years, King expresses profound personal transformation, stating, “I’m not the same person I was on January 19.” She acknowledges the complexities of grief and shares that her upcoming Netflix film, “Shirley,” scheduled for release on March 22, serves as a tribute to her late son. 
King reflects on grief as a journey, recognizing its unique path for each individual. She emphasizes the depth of love and loss, sharing a statement released shortly after Ian’s passing that highlighted his caring nature and the profound impact he had on others.Ian was the son of King and her former spouse, record producer Ian Alexander Sr., with whom she parted ways in 2007 following a ten-year marriage. 
King’s first public appearance since the tragedy was in June 2022, where she was honored with the Women in Power award at the Filming Italy Festival.
On January 19 of the previous year, King paid tribute to Ian on social media, sharing her ongoing journey of processing his loss. She honored his memory with an Instagram post featuring an orange sky lantern, symbolizing his enduring presence despite his physical absence.
