The wacky tech millionaire and his therapist, Leslie (Fred Armisen), role-play jail life in the opening four minutes of Unstable’s new season, which you can see above. Naturally, Jackson (John Owen Lowe), Ellis’s son, wisely points out how absurd it is.
Rob Lowe shared with Tudum, “I’ve always wanted to star in a gritty, hard-hitting prison drama like ‘Midnight Express,’ and this is as close as I’ll ever get as an actor.” He added, “I spent at least ten to fifteen minutes on that prison set before filming, preparing just like my heroes, including Daniel Day-Lewis.”
“Unstable” Season 1 ended with a shocking finale as Rob Lowe’s character, Ellis Dragon, set his friend-turned-rival Jean’s (Christina Chang) car on fire. Season 2 quickly addresses the fallout from Ellis’s drastic decision, showcasing his unique and unpredictable way of handling the consequences.
Unfortunately, Ellis’s time in prison is brief, as shown in the video where his business partner Anna (Sian Clifford) uses her connections to secure his release. However, their business remains in jeopardy. The board and Anna agree that Dragon needs a fresh perspective. Could Jackson be the one to step up? would he be willing to sacrifice for the opportunity?
John Owen shares, “What’s so funny about that journey is the quest to pull away and the innate gravitational pull back in. We really exaggerate it with Jackson and Ellis. There’s a shining moment where it seems like we’ll see Jackson in his true form, having some space. Season 2 is exciting because we max out how hard Ellis can pull him back into his world in the most intense ways possible.”The opening minutes of Season 2 introduce Iris Apatow as Anna’s stepdaughter, Georgia, who becomes an intern at Dragon. Bringing in Georgia helps the writers achieve one of their main goals for the new season.

John Owen reveals, “Our goal was to humanize Anna by delving into her backstory and showing what her life is like beyond Ellis—though there isn’t much of a life outside of him for her.” This season also features Fargo’s Lamorne Morris as a new biotech creator, further intensifying the rivalry between Ellis and Jackson.
