The 39-year-old said, “I think [when I was] younger, too, I would come off way more rebellious than I was,” on Monday, February 19, on the “Broad Ideas” podcast. “I was thinking, ‘Oh no, I’m not doing that.'” When Ashlee Simpson was a rising star, she refused her father’s proposal to give her a purity ring in order to forge her own path.
The 39-year-old Simpson said, “I think [when I was] younger, too, I would come off way more rebellious than I was,” on Monday, February 19, on the “Broad Ideas” podcast. “I was thinking, ‘Oh no, I’m not doing that.'” “I would observe my father saying things like, ‘You can’t talk to this guy.'” “Or like, ‘Here’s your ring to save yourself,'” Ashlee clarified, alluded to her father Joe Simpson’s attempts to help his two daughters prepare for marriage.
Like her sibling, Ashlee also became interested in music at a young age. She said that when her dad tried to give her one when she was twelve, she said, “Oh, no thank you.” I promise not to let you know when I’m having sex.
Ashlee admitted to having her first sexual experience at the age of 17—even without the purity ring—to podcast cohosts Rachel Bilson and Olivia Allen. She said, “I always wanted it to be open that you don’t know what I’m doing.”
The singer of “Pieces of Me,” who is four years Jessica’s junior, continued by saying that her mother Tina Simpson knew she would require a different set of guidelines as a child.
Ashlee remarked, “My mom really would pay attention and see me if I needed something different,” recalling how she used to be “an independent soul.” “I desired to pursue my own goals. I had to feel free, or they had to let me be free,” she continued. Ashlee used to keep her private affairs private, but these days she is transparent. She expressed her desire to instill her openness in her children, particularly in her eldest child, son Bronx. 
She remarked of her son, whom she shares with her ex-husband Pete Wentz, “It’s so interesting having a 15-year-old,” adding that the mother and son had “open” discussions about sex. Having those candid discussions is crucial, in my opinion. Your children will be hiding stuff from you if they do anything else, Ashlee remarked. “Else, the story won’t make sense.”
